Learning and Skills Teachers help young people and adults within all parts of the education and training sector achieve their dream careers. Settings are varied and can include work-based and independent training provision, further education, adult and higher education, offender learning, and the voluntary sector, so people who enjoy broad horizons in their careers are well suited to the role. The role is also ‘dual-professional’, meaning individuals must first have achieved competence in a vocational or subject specialism and then subsequently trained as a teacher.
This page describes the latest version of the Learning and Skills Teacher standard (version 1.2), which came into force in September 2023. This version revises the funding band, taking it from a maximum of £10,000 to a maximum of £7,000. Versions 1 and 1.1 are still used for apprentices who started no later than 3 January 2022 and 11 September 2023 respectively. For more information, please visit the IfATE’s website.
End-Point Assessment Components
To complete their End-Point Assessment, Learning and Skills Teacher apprentices must achieve a pass or distinction in the following two components.

To support this assessment method, the apprentice produces a thematic case study mapped to the relevant knowledge, skills and behaviours across the assessment themes, and an online presentation demonstrating their journey towards their mastery of current technologies. The End-Point Assessor evaluates the case study, and prepares questions for the subsequent professional discussion.
The professional discussion is a two-way discussion between the apprentice and the End-Point Assessor. Following their review of the thematic case study and online presentation, the End-Point Assessor prepares a minimum of 15 questions to ask the apprentice. The professional discussion lasts 60 minutes (+10% variance at the End-Point Assessor’s discretion).

Apprentices are observed delivering two teaching sessions, enabling direct assessment of the professional knowledge, skills and behaviours. At least one of the observations takes place in a formal setting, for example, a lecture theatre, workshop or classroom. The second observation could be carried out in a different teaching environment, for example, the natural work environment. Each observation lasts 60 minutes, creating a total observation time of 120 minutes (+10% variance at the End-Point Assessor’s discretion).
A 20-minute question-and-answer session takes place following the second observation. The questions asked will clarify aspects of the observation and explore any knowledge, skills and behaviours that couldn’t be demonstrated naturally during the observations.
