Health and Care Support Assistants work in a range of settings. The broad purpose is to provide high-quality and compassionate care and support to individuals. Daily duties vary depending on the workplace and whether the work is focused on supporting healthcare professionals in providing clinical healthcare or in providing personal care and support in adult social care.

Assessment components 

To complete their apprenticeship assessment, Health and Social Care Foundation Apprentices must achieve a pass in the following two components.

  • This component contains 25 multiple choice questions centred around real-life scenarios to help the apprentice demonstrate their understanding of core principles and procedures. The multiple choice test lasts 45 minutes. To achieve a pass, all 25 questions must be answered correctly.

  • In this component, the Apprenticeship Assessor observes the apprentice carrying out three simulated tasks followed by a question-and-answer session. The observation with questioning must be taken in a controlled environment. It lasts for up to one hour. Up to 50 minutes for the observation and 10 minutes for the questioning. To achieve a pass, the apprentice must meet all of the relevant knowledge and skills.
